The architectural evolution at Petchburi continues at Wat Mahathat ("Monastery
of the Great Relic"), an enormous white prang that dominates the tiny town
like a giant rocket ship resting on a launchpad. Visitors can wander around
the cloister filled with Buddha images and studying monks, then climb the late
Ayuthayan-style prang for views over the town. Near the east entrance is a viham
filled with impressive Bud dha images and patches of old murals that still
display some original flavor.
