Another cave with less royal trappings but an equally fascinating interior is
the dark and mysterious cave in Hup Chan Valley, some two km from the turnoff
to Bang Pu village. Guides are necessary since the cave remains in almost total
darkness and the hidden ledges and bewildering tunnels can easily confuse the
firsttime visitor.
Tham Kaeo is entered by descending a ladder and then maneuvering through a
series of chambers that connect with various sizes of passageways. After 10
minutes of hiking, you emerge at a large hillside opening after passing
limestone formations that glitter like diamonds in the dark. The ancient
stalactites and spectacular petrified waterfalls should not be touched, since
oils from human skin permanently stop all further lime deposits.
